Get to Know the Oaks

Oaks (Quercus spp.) are among the most widespread and important deciduous trees in Europe and represent the backbone of Serbia’s forest ecosystems. They are known for their longevity, strong wood, and significant role in soil and biodiversity preservation. For centuries, oak forests have provided shelter for plant and animal species, while also shaping the landscapes and culture of our regions.

In Serbia, five key oak species dominate: Turkey oak (Q. cerris), pedunculate oak (Q. robur), sessile oak (Q. petraea), Hungarian oak (Q. frainetto), and downy oak (Q. pubescens). Each of these species has developed unique characteristics that enable it to survive in different conditions — from moist lowland valleys and floodplains to dry hillsides and sunny sub-Mediterranean environments. This adaptability makes oaks essential for the stability and diversity of forest communities.
